Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
Join our Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course and acquire the advanced first aid and CPR skills essential for handling emergencies in remote or wilderness environments. This comprehensive training prepares you to provide urgent evacuation and extended care for five or more days until professional medical assistance arrives. You’ll also develop advanced leadership, decision-making, and rescue skills, including extrication techniques and the effective use of professional tools and resources.
Unlike standard first aid courses, much of this training occurs outdoors, simulating real-world conditions. Expect to engage in physical activities and scenarios, giving you hands-on experience in challenging environments. You’ll be prepared for anything the wilderness throws at you!

Course Details
- Duration: 80 hours
- Feb 1-5 8:30 am – 6:00 pm
- Feb 6-7 8:30 am – 6:30 pm
- Feb 8-9 9:30 am – 6:00 pm (dinner break 2 hours) 8:00 pm – 8:00 am (day 9)
- Audience:
Perfect for rescuers and professionals who specialize in decision-making, evacuation, and patient transport in remote areas. Suitable for those in remote emergency services, worksites, ski patrol, search and rescue, and related fields. - Prerequisites:
Participants must be at least 16 years of age, in good health, and in physical condition.

Certification
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:
- 3-year certification in Wilderness First Responder
- 1-year certification in Basic Life Support (digital certificate provided)
Completion Criteria
To receive your certification, you must:
- Successfully demonstrate all required skills
- Complete a written, closed-book evaluation with a minimum mark of 75%
- Attend and participate in 100% of the course
- Meet any additional legislative requirements, if applicable
Recertification
To maintain certification, you’ll need:
- 40 hours of refresher instruction
- Proof of current Wilderness First Responder certification (or as legislation requires)
- Access to the most up-to-date Canadian Red Cross Wilderness First Responder participant materials
